WINSTON CHURCHILL AND WE
WINSTON CHURCHILL AND WE
I usually like to visit places that are famous for their nature and food. This time, however, a friend’s reflection on history and politics led my way to the mansion of Winston Churchil, who shaped the fate of this country. Even though I have lived in the UK for over 20 years, I regretted not being there sooner.
I knew a lot about Churchill, or I thought so, but did you know that Churchill, a life lover, traveler, and devoted lover, was also a master of language, a journalist, even though his literary and artistic work was lost in the shadow of his politics?
I did not know. When I learned that he also has a journalist identity, I wanted to examine it more closely and share it with you.
Churchill is a great statesman obsessed with savoring life. Despite his habits such as alcohol and smoking, he enjoyed eating and traveling. Churchill, a political person, shaped the fate of other peoples as well as the British people in the decades he was active in politics. The fact that he is a writer, journalist and historian has always been overshadowed by his politics.
The furniture, photographs, books and personal memories of this great statesman are exhibited in the house, which has been converted into a historical museum.
The highest point of the house is about 650 meters above sea level. With a magnificent view across the city area…
Churchill completely transformed the house between 1922 and 1924, simplifying and modernizing it, installing large sash windows and allocating more light to the house. In 1938, when Churchill thought of selling his house for financial reasons, his friends came to his rescue… They saved the house by providing financial support to him, especially the owner of the Daily Telegraph newspaper, of which he was the author. At that time, the house had 5 reception rooms, 19 beds and dressing rooms, 8 bathrooms, three farmhouses on 80 acres, heating and a lighted pool.
He also has a workshop in the garden where he paints. Among his hobbies, such as garden design and masonry, Churchill also devoted a great deal of time to painting. He made nearly 500 paintings and gifted most of his works to his friends.
The walls at the entrance of the mansion are full of Churchill’s famous words that have made history. I immediately noted what I heard for the first time and what I will never forget. From time to time, I collect such words on my travels and use one of them as an earring for that day. He has beautiful words. I want to share some of them with you:
The price of power is responsibility.
The price of power is responsibility.
Do you have enemies? How nice! This means that you have taken a characterful stance on some issues in life.
Courage is the most respected value among human values; because, as the saying goes, “the value that secures all other values is courage.”

History will be kind to me. Because I plan to write it.
I want to be sad, but I can’t find the time.
If you want to end your performance successfully; You have to put your head in the lion’s mouth.
Among the things I didn’t know before and learned here for the first time was that Churchill actually suffered from stuttering. No one would have guessed that Winston would eventually deliver the most famous speeches in the English language. When talking about him, it is also emphasized how much he likes to play with words.
